DIY: Mason Jar Match Holder

I found this little project over on Pinterest and knew I had to give it a go. It is such a cute way to store matches (and light them too) and I do love putting my mason jars to work.

How to Make Your DIY Mason Jar Match Holder

Stuff you’ll need:

  • Mason Jar
  • Strike Anywhere Matches
  • Sandpaper
  • Scissors

Method:

1. Use the inner lid of the mason jar and trace its shape onto the sand paper.

2. Cut out the shape you drew.

3. Insert the sandpaper cut out into the lid and stack ’em up. (You can also glue the sandpaper into place on the lid if you like.)

4. Now, your matches will look pretty sitting where you need them, and all you need to do to get a little flame is strike them on the lid.

Note: I didn’t have any strike anywhere matches on hand so I used regular matches as stand ins, because I wanted to go ahead and show you what the jar should look like when it’s finished.

Regular matches won’t light on the sandpaper, but I’m thinking about modifying the lid to insert the striking strip from a matchbox (like this). That way I can use the matches I already have on hand.

How cute is this little gift idea for wedding guests?

Pretty much anything using a mason jar (from cute storage containers to hydroponic jars, this is one versatile item!)

UPDATE: Emily over at Goodness Greeness mentioned on twitter how awesome this little jar would be on camping trips, and I have to agree. Such a great way to keep you matches dry against the elements. Thanks Emily!
