DIY: Make a Wish Birthday Card

Some birthdays call for something more personal than a store bought card, and a milestone worth celebrating deserves a little extra effort. Spotting an adorable version of this concept on Pinterest was all the inspiration needed to create a completely original take on it. The result is a card that is interactive, charming and genuinely one of a kind.

What You Need

  • Card stock (brown works well for the cupcake base)
  • A real birthday candle
  • An actual cupcake wrapper
  • Paint and a fine brush for lettering
  • Ribbon
  • A needle or pin for making holes
  • Scissors

How to Make It

Step 1: Prepare the Cupcake Wrapper

Take a standard cupcake wrapper and cut it down to create the appearance of a cupcake sitting on the card. Trimming it into a flattened wrapper shape gives it a realistic and dimensional look without adding too much bulk.

Step 2: Letter the Card

Lightly sketch out the wording directly onto the card stock in pencil first, then go over it carefully with paint. Working out the layout in pencil before committing to paint keeps everything neat and properly spaced.

Step 3: Assemble the Cupcake

Once the painted lettering is fully dry, layer the cupcake wrapper and card stock cupcake shape into position on the front of the card and adhere them in place.

Step 4: Attach the Candle

Use a needle or pin to poke two small holes through the card on either side of where the candle will sit. Thread a length of ribbon through both holes and tie it snugly around the candle to hold it securely upright on the card.

The finishing touch is the best part. Hand the card to the recipient with the candle lit and ready, and let them make their wish before blowing it out. There is one condition though — the wish has to be shared out loud, or it simply does not count.
